Phil Starke

Phil Starke began to show an interest in art from the time he lived in Germany as a young boy, while his father was in the military.  He studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

Inspired by the instructors at the Academy, Starke changed course from his aim at the advertising world and developed a passion for oil painting.  It was upon graduation from the American Academy of Art that he decided to plunge into the profession of fine art.  Phil Starke has been painting professionally since his graduation from the American Academy of Art.

From the Midwest, West and Southwest, Phil has continued to be inspired.  Each season and each region has its own color palette and unique landscape. From landscape to figures and plein-air to studio painting Phil continues to find inspiration for his work. He participates in numerous exhibitions and gallery shows annually.”

"As an artist I'm always learning more about painting, different techniques and ways to see color and render shape and form.  I'm always practicing the craft of painting because there is no standing still, you're either moving ahead or going backwards.  The art of painting is all about your personal response to your subject, being able to convey to the viewer the beauty of what you see, but the practice of painting is knowledge of the basics and developing good habits of practice and study.”

Early on his interest took him to many parts of the West and Southwest, where he soon grew to love the culture and the landscape.  "The goal is to paint so the viewer can appreciate the beauty of the scene and "see" it through the artist's eyes," says Starke. Phil feels this is a way of connecting with a busy public -- a public that may not take the time to stop and realize the beauty around them.

"If I've done my job right, anyone looking at my work will be able to feel the emotion and mood of the moment and will want to spend some time with the piece -- taking in all the things I had to say."

Choosing to share his passion for painting and inspire others,
Phil teaches workshops, helping others develop their own individual talent.

Phil also has excellent Online Art Classes that feature a weekly video lesson and critique. "This is the best fine art instruction program I've found," says Cindy Salaski, Founder of artmatch4U. "In just one month I learned more from Phil than I did in all of the years of my personal study combined."

Students watch as Phil gives a painting demonstration in Tucson, Arizona.
