Lawrence Churski

Lawrence J. Churski is originally from Toledo, Ohio. In 1963 he received a full scholarship to the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. He continued his education at the Cleveland Institute of Art. His father was also an artist. While studying his father’s paintings as a child, he was mesmerized by a particular pastel painting. It was an image of Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevada mountain range that his father had painted while in the Civilian Conservation Corps, done on location or "en plein air" as we say today. That painting made such an impact on him that he has been a plein air artist for over 30 years.

Lawrence became a successful illustrator and designer for Artists Incorporated, an Akron, Ohio based graphic design studio where he would eventually become owner and president. In that time period he won numerous illustration and design awards, including a National Addy.
As an art student, he had seen an exhibition of John Singer Sargent’s paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Studying The Oyster Gatherers of Cancale from a distance, the young artist could not believe how one magical stroke that had so much detail, could be so abstract on closer observation. He would later incorporate that technique into his own work.

Mr. Churski has studied with Lowell Elsworth Smith, Don Stone, Charles Reid, Roberta Clark, and Burton Silverman. Other influences were: Andrew Wyeth, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper, Joaquin Sorolla and Fredrick Judd Waugh. He teaches and does workshops nationally, stressing in order: Design, Values, Color, Brushwork and Accurate Drawing. "Visualize the finished painting in your head before you paint. If you can see the finished painting beforehand, only then can you paint it successfully.”

Lawrence loves to paint seascapes and “vanishing landscapes”, as we never know what will be in front of us when we return to a scene, and having a record of recording a moment in time is priceless.
Churski has won numerous fine art awards and his work is in permanent collections around the world, including Brazil and Japan.
Currently his work is showing at the Rich Timmons Gallery in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and The Lawrence Churski Gallery in Bath, Ohio.
