Joyce Hicks

Joyce Hicks is a self-taught artist who has an innate ability for transforming ordinary landscape scenes into beautiful works of art that have made her an internationally acclaimed artist. Her dynamic brushwork and expressive use of color combines in a very unique way giving her paintings a fresh, welcoming look that is easily recognizable.

She paints with a powerful signature style that invites viewers into her scenes for a glimpse of a simpler way of life. She shares her love of the landscape with viewers by painting a variety of subjects from rural farms, country landscapes and time-worn coastal cottages.

"My original paintings of beautiful places are inspired by frequent travel which allows me to be up close and personal with the landscape," Hicks says. "I never try to depict a subject as it actually is but instead I record my personal response to the scenes before me. If the old white homestead is a bit neglected, then I simply capture it in sunlight to discover its real beauty.

If there is only one withered rose on an old trellis then why not one hundred in full bloom? I'm especially drawn to sunlight and shadow and how it can transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary ones capable of taking my breath away.

In an attempt to translate my feelings for a subject I use entertaining brush strokes, strong contrasts, and colors both soft and bold. These elements combine in a very unique and personal way providing a visual invitation, a welcome mat of sorts, to tempt others into my world. My purpose is to celebrate the landscape with brush and paint in hope that the joy I feel will also be felt by those who view and collect my work."
